How to clip streams

Updated · Crowdcut

To clip a stream, find the moments worth posting (where chat spiked, where viewers clipped, where you hear a big reaction), cut each one into a short self-contained clip that opens on the setup, reframe it to vertical 9:16, add captions and a hook, then post. You can do it by hand in an editor, or paste the VOD into a clip maker that finds and cuts the moments for you.

1. Get the stream

Clip from the VOD (the saved broadcast), not a screen recording. On Twitch it's under Videos → Past broadcasts; on Kick under the channel's Videos tab; on YouTube a finished live stream stays as a video. Twitch deletes past broadcasts after about a week for most channels, so clip early or save it as a highlight. Clip your own streams, channels that have cleared you, or campaign footage that allows it.

2. Find the moments

The audience already marked them. On Twitch and YouTube, watch the chat replay for bursts: messages coming faster than usual, a wall of the same emote, people typing "clip it". On Twitch, the Clips tab shows what viewers clipped. Without chat (Kick VODs, uploads), listen for loud reactions and laughter. A four-hour stream usually has a handful of real moments, not dozens.

Crowdcut does this step from the chat replay on Twitch and YouTube VODs and from the audio and transcript everywhere else, and ranks moments by how people reacted.

3. Cut each moment

Start a few seconds before the payoff so the clip makes sense on its own, and end on the reaction, not after it. 20 to 45 seconds suits most moments; Shorts can run up to 3 minutes for vertical video. Cut dead air inside the clip.

4. Reframe to vertical

TikTok, Shorts and Reels are 1080×1920. For gaming, stack the facecam on top and zoomed gameplay below. For IRL or talking, crop to the person or use a blurred fill so nothing important is cut off.

5. Caption it and write the hook

Most people scroll with the sound off, so burn in captions, ideally word by word with the current word highlighted. Put a short hook on the first seconds that says why to keep watching, in your own voice. Write a new one for every clip: posting the same template line on every video is a quick way to get an account limited.

6. Post

Upload natively to each platform with a caption and a few relevant tags. Post the best clips first, while the stream is fresh.

Questions

How long should a stream clip be?

Long enough to set up and land the moment: usually 20 to 45 seconds. Crowdcut cuts 8 to 90 seconds, about 30 by default.

How many clips can I get from one stream?

It depends on the stream; most have a handful of real moments. On a Crowdcut plan you choose up to 20 clips per video.

Can I clip a stream while it's live?

Crowdcut can on Twitch (beta, on plans with watched channels). Kick live clipping is available on request; YouTube live isn't supported yet.
